Background of the Study
Gender empowerment programs are vital in enhancing women’s political participation by addressing the structural barriers that hinder women’s involvement in politics. In Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, several gender empowerment initiatives have been introduced in recent years to encourage women to participate more actively in the political process (Ogundipe & Eze, 2024). These programs aim to provide women with the necessary skills, resources, and support systems to engage in political leadership roles and to promote gender equality within the local governance structure. However, while these programs have had some positive outcomes, there is limited empirical evidence on their effectiveness in enhancing women’s political participation at the grassroots level (Abdullahi & Isa, 2025). This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of gender empowerment programs in Lafia, focusing on their impact on women’s political participation and the extent to which they have helped overcome traditional barriers to women’s political engagement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the existence of various gender empowerment programs in Lafia, women continue to be underrepresented in political offices and decision-making positions. The question of whether these empowerment programs have been effective in overcoming the barriers that women face in politics remains largely unanswered (Ali & Audu, 2023). This study aims to fill this gap by evaluating the impact of gender empowerment programs on women’s political participation in Lafia Local Government Area.

1.6 Significance of the Study
The study is significant because it will provide empirical evidence on the effectiveness of gender empowerment programs in promoting women’s political participation in Lafia. It will contribute to policy discussions on how gender empowerment programs can be improved to increase women’s involvement in local governance and leadership. The findings will be useful to policymakers, gender advocates, and organizations working on women’s political empowerment, as they seek to design more effective programs.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on Lafia Local Government Area and the impact of gender empowerment programs on women’s political participation in the area. Limitations include the challenge of measuring long-term impacts of the programs and the potential bias in responses from participants who may feel compelled to report positive outcomes.
